If you need a bit of retail therapy, then you won't be disappointed!

Turkey is renowned for its linens, leather goods, designer copies, jewellery and much more.

Kalkan itself has an excellent Thursday market, where you are almost obliged to haggle over items like jeans, silver, backgammon sets, handbags, watches, tablecloths, etc. When you hand over your money, if you see them brush the notes on the ground, it means that's the first sale of the day. The stallholders will ask you to look but they're not overly aggressive, and no one takes offense if you choose not to buy.

The town itself has an array of wonderful shops to keep you busy. Whether you're looking for shoes, Turkish Delight, gorgeous leather handbags, tailor-made shirts, silver & gold jewellery, DVDs, cashmere pashminas or souvenirs, Kalkan has it all and more!

If you feel like venturing a bit further for bargains, then visit the huge covered market at Fethiye. This expansive market is held on Tuesdays and has hundreds of stalls and quite a number of pancake cafes. One word of advice, whether you're visiting the market at Kalkan or Fethiye: If it's particularly hot weather, go early, as it can get quite humid under the canvas.

Sarpendon Gifts, next to the harbour, has an eclectic mix of gifts, jewellery and collectible artwork.

The Köseleci Jewellery shop has a wide selection of necklaces, rings, bracelets and earrings, the most stunning of which are those pieces designed and handcrafted by the owner's husband. He combines silver, leather and semi-precious gem stones. He will even make to order.

If you can't possibly visit anywhere without buying a handbag (or is that just me?), then head for Class Leather. 'Jeffry' will show you his outstanding collection of bags. If you've always wanted a true designer bag but refuse to pay £500, £800 or even £1000 for one, then you will love Class Leather. The quality of the leather only improves with age. If you smile sweetly, you might even get a discount!
